See the Bloomberg story below.
There are many ironies in all this. Not the least is that the wind project was widely supported by Delawareans in preference to a new coal burner proposed by NRG. NRG ended up with the wind project and has now cancelled it.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection fines DuPont $750,000, but ….
The ongoing nightmare of Chambers Works
Most people probably know that the DuPont Company (formally E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co.), at the New Jersey end of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, at its Chambers Works site (DuPont Company Chambers Works website) , operates one of largest hazardous waste facilities in the US.
Essentially it’s made up of a hazardous waste landfill (dump) and a wastewater treatment plant discharging into the Delaware River.
Nasty industrial waste from all over the US, and sometimes from overseas, comes to South Jersey to be "treated" and then dumped, either on land or into the river. DuPont calls it "Secure Environmental Treatment." We call it a disgrace.

[Comment: Markell had been dodging and weaving on this issue for months. There's no way he would have stalled fracking in the Delaware River basin—the DRBC meeting has been cancelled as the drilling industry doesn't have the votes right now—without a lot of effective organizing. A key underlying problem is that fracking has been exempted from the Clean Water Act.

"Fracking" Proposal Currently Lacks Sufficient Health and Safety Protections
Delaware will vote "No" at Monday meeting of the Delaware River Basin Commission
WILMINGTON — The proposed regulations that would authorize drilling and hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") to begin in the Delaware River Basin lack critical details on how public health and safety would be protected, Governor Jack Markell wrote today in a letter to the other voting members of the Delaware River Basin Commission.
In the letter, Markell made clear that Delaware’s representative would vote against the Natural Gas Development Regulations at the Commission’s meeting in Trenton this Monday.

Perhaps the main positive development in our grim political situation is the Occupy Wall Street movement.
The Occupy Delaware branch of this can be found at:

We don’t know where this is going, but let’s hope.

- Subject: Occupy Delaware permit in Markel’s hands
-
- Just a phone call can help put economic justice on the agenda in Delaware.
-
- As you may know, the permit for Occupy Delaware is being handled by the Governor’s office. Last night the General Assembly of OD voted to do their best to address the Governor’s concerns, but they are determined to start the occupation of H. Fletcher Brown Park in Wilmington this Saturday. Now is the time to bring a little political influence to bear on Markel, so OD is encouraging a campaign to call Markel at (302) 577-3210 and ask him to OK the permit.
-
- Call Governor Jack Markell! Tell him to support democracy by approving the application by Occupy Delaware to use H. Fletcher Brown Park.
-
- (302) 577-3210
-
- Call today! Spread the word!

Joyce Mullins died on the 4th of July 2009. I, and many other people who appreciated Joyce, didn’t know, possibly because The News Journal apparently never ran an obit.
Joyce was a for-real reporter. She never, as far as I know, had a high-profile job or an especially wide audience for her work. That was our loss.
We depend on reporters–I include bloggers, etc–to hold up mirrors, making us, or at least giving us the opportunity, to see ourselves are we really are. Keep reading »
